My primary residence is now in MN, I was shifted to Schakowsky's district the last go-round so nothing to lose. I voted for Norm Coleman for Senate in 2008 only to see Al Franken and ACORN pretty much steal the election.

So for this night I headed north to MN, a full moon yielding to a frosty morning, to vote in my caucus. We gathered in the local elementary school, in the west, MN7, and put pen to paper ballot. While we waited for the formalities to start I visited with my table mates. We talked a bit about Dem Gov. Mark Dayton and his profligate ways, and the new GOP hold on both houses, thankfully.

But I noticed on the table with literature by the MN lite coffee (they drink the stuff all day up here so it's not too strong, the coffee version of Minnesota Nice), the only presidential candidate who showed there was Rick Santorum.

We talked about why we'd come and the lady across from me said, well, she told her daughter she had to come tonight, and she quoted me Burke...

And that was the story tonight.

Well, that would assume he's a fe-fi-fo-fum kind of guy, a giant.

Let's topple the Obama beanstalk, folks.

Because whether you're a cafeteria Catholic or a Latin mass lover, or even a formerly snot-nosed product of Catholic schools, this is WAR.

Even that fragile reed Peggy Noonan is on board.

But the big political news of the week isn't Mr. Romney's gaffe, or even his victory in Florida. The big story took place in Washington. That's where a bomb went off that not many in the political class heard, or understood.
But President Obama just may have lost the election.
The president signed off on a Health and Human Services ruling that says under ObamaCare Catholic Institutions—including its charities, hospitals and schools—will be required by law, for the first time ever, to provide and pay for insurance coverage that includes contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs and sterilization procedures. If they do not, they will face ruinous fines in the millions of dollars. Or they can always go out of business.
In other words, the Catholic Church was told this week that its institutions can't be Catholic anymore.

He may not snooze most of the day, who knows about this multiple choice president, he may claim he falls to his knees in prayer, but our sleeping giant electorate may be roused to action this fall by a few good Jacks...or Jills:)

NBC's Dead Audience Debate

That's what they want, so America will tune out the GOP. They'll take one for the Obama team, since most politicos who watch MSNBC are crazed left anyway--they're not going to keep us as viewers.

The pundits are tracking twitter where we're expressing ourselves in full force--let the audience respond, otherwise the debate might as well be held in an empty room.

Romney tried to wound Newt by making over the top suggestions that he was a lobbyist, while today we learn of Mitt's investments in Fannie and Freddie, albeit in a blind trust. Kind of a draw on that one, but this is the crux of that back and forth:

The release of the tax information is unlikely to end a problem that has dogged Mr. Romney on the campaign trail. Rich Galen, a Republican strategist who used to advise Mr. Gingrich, said the Romney release puts him ahead of his rivals' disclosure, "so the number of years isn't the issue; the issue will be the sophisticated use of the existing tax code."

Couple that with Mitt's timid tax reform and you see why conservatives have deep reservations about the guy despite his private sector success.

Good ole Mitt tried one more time to connect with voters, rattling off lousy Obamanomics stats in a perfunctory manner. Mitt Romney, Talking Point Man.

But the moment that stuck with me was the question on what have you done for conservatism. Mitt thinks just raising a family and working in the private sector counts as conservative. Kind of like having to buy government healthcare just for existing. Funny, though, I know lots of flaming liberals with families and private sector experience.

Ron Paul had it right, defining conservatism as smaller government and protection of bedrock individual liberty. As did Newt. And Newt said this too: I ask Americans to be not for me, but with me.

The old Obama cheerleader media may wish the Tea Party and conservative movement were dead.

But to hearken back to another great American, we have just begun to fight:)

Which seems fine to me, voters can make up their own minds, and perhaps they're smarting from their repeated endorsements of the Bizarro Blago and the disaster, even to the insatiable, kleptocratic left, that is Barack Obama. But then they go on to say, as reported by old news station CBS:

Field felt it necessary to push for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and the entry of the U.S. into World War II, in contrast to Col. Robert McCormick and his isolationist and anti-Roosevelt Tribune, the editorial said.

However, the editorial is quick to point out, that was a bygone era “when many American newspapers were unabashedly partisan, and not necessarily only on the editorial page. Not unlike news shops on cable TV and the Web today, they catered to a core of readers who thought very much like them.”

Today, newspapers’ goal is to appear to the widest readership they can with unbiased news coverage.

Palmetto State pushback, voting decisively for a better candidate to carry the common sense conservative banner into the fall contest against Barack Obama.

Newt swept the highland and the lowland, rural and exurban alike. He won among women, he won among men, he won independents, and every age group but for youth which went for Ron Paul:)

And it turns out Team Newt had a better ground game than Romney--volunteers coming out of their ears:)

Newt is cerebral and grounded, passionate and blunt, with the perseverance to prevail against the PC media PAC in the tank for Barack Obama and persuade the American people the GOP will get us back on track. And who can forget the biting wit of this ad?:)

The beating was captured on video by an accomplice and later posted on YouTube. The video shows the mob of young men yelling the n-word more than 25 times as they punched and kicked the victim — who appeared to be of Asian descent — in the face and body. They dragged the victim near metal Dumpsters in the alley behind the 2800 block of South Princeton. There they hit him with chunks of ice and choked him. One attacker used a stolen shoe, a sliver and black Nike sneaker, to pound the victim in the face.

Good Lord. Obama didn't bail them out to save the business, he did it to save porky, unsustainable union pension funds and keep his megabucks donor stream coming at the expense of rank and file union members.

When he did it he stiffed little old ladies, retired teachers, firemen and cops from Indiana who held senior claim through their bonds.

What's more--
Isn't there a difference between being pro-market and pro-business?

Imean it's not like this is the first time Romney has beencriticized in this manner. It was Mike Huckabee who said thatRomney "looked like the guy who laid you off." As I recall thishelped Huckabee defeat Romney in Iowa four years ago.
Let me put it another way. If Newt & Perry's criticisms ofRomney (and for that matter Huckabee's) are anathema to Reaganconservatism then Romney should have no problem winning SouthCarolina in ten days time.

But South Carolina's currentunemployment rate is 9.9%. Granted the unemploymentrate fell by 0.6% in November, the state's largestmonthly drop in 35 years. But that's still far higher than Iowa's unemployment rate of 5.7% and New Hampshire'sunemployment rate of 5.2%. If Romney can convince SouthCarolinians he can bring about prosperity then he can win.But Romney won't win if they believe he will bring them pinkslips. Romney has his work cut out for him.

While prosecutors and regulators have jointly conducted dozens of depositions with former and current employees, a senior official in the Chicago office of MF Global recently declined to meet with the federal authorities, people briefed on the investigation said.
That official, Edith O’Brien, a treasurer at MF Global, is considered a “person of interest” in the investigation, the people said. Federal authorities suspect that she transferred about $200 million to JPMorgan Chase in London on the eve of the bankruptcy of MF Global, money that turned out to be customer cash. [snip]

The investigators are deposing employees as they search for the missing money. Some authorities are now examining whether MF Global used money from futures customers to pay securities customers who were closing accounts as the firm began to collapse, according to a person briefed on the matter.

So did they rip off farmers to pay Wall St or overseas obligations? You think this doesn't have an impact on this election? Think again.

The race goes on, though I hope now that we're past this open primary in NH Ron Paul slips low, and wish Huntsman and Perry would drop out before South Carolina.

Not gonna happen so I imagine they will siphon off some more votes from Newt, the only serious alternative to Romney, as Brit Hume pointed out last night.

So it may come down to Florida, the Sunshine State, where Gov. Rick Scott is at the helm this time, rather than that moderate Obama-hugger Charlie Crist.

In that we have Mitt Obamneycare, O's crony-capitalist heir apparent.

Romney always hedges, plays it safe--oh yeah, he's "unscathed", above the fray--well maybe that's because he doesn't know what the fray is. "I've lived in the economy" he says. I don't play class warfare but Romney implicitly accepts Obama's and the left's premise with his defensive, timid tax policy. He's going to challenge Obama as another phony warrior for the middle class populist?

Paul goes after Santorum on his big government compassionate conservative spending and he's right.

And then we had Clinton hack ABC's All About Condoms George Stephanopoulos and a doped up Diane Sawyer fouling our living rooms with their bias and bile. Only Newt questioned the premise, only Newt rose above the petty distractions they posed all night long. Only Newt rose to defend millions of Americans who are disparaged every day, yet get up and do the work of the country.

Newt actually cut the size of government when he had a chance--ratcheting back spending and reforming entitlements.

Newt for president.

This is where it all went wrong:

When Finney started as a civil rights activist during the 1960s, Woodlawn was filled with taverns and run-down graystone buildings, many of them burned out in "insurance fires."

Back then, Finney was poised to take over his father's Leon's Barbecue chain of restaurants.

But, as part of what The Woodlawn Organization co-founder Bishop Arthur Brazier dubbed "a revolution of rising expectations," Finney instead helped beat back plans by the U. of C. to tear down those buildings and expand its campus south into Woodlawn.

The organization also chased out local grocers who price-gouged their African-American customers and, for a brief period, convinced the Blackstone Rangers gang to contribute toward neighborhood improvements. That effort dissolved in 1972, when four of the gang's leaders were found guilty of using $1 million in federal grants for a phony job training program.

At inception.

Presumably a price-gouger and his security get their due. Another price-gouger I'm sure.

Enough is enough. Cut all this stuff off. And let an honest man or woman make an honest living without having to compete with crooks and pols and curry favor.

More double-dipping by retirees and worse. Sun Times behind a pay wall. From my print edition:

Retired Chicago Public Schools teachers working as substitutes racked up $1.13 million in improper benefits between 2007 and 2011, while in a separate case, a teacher showed students how to bypass filters so that they could view pornography on school computers.

This is the caliber of a public school teacher in Chicago. Don't tell me this isn't representative of the union system Dems blindly defend. Two abusive findings among dozens, with children coming in last again. Another incident:

A teacher allegedly "touched the genital area of a male student by running his fingers down the zipper of the student's pants." To "buy the student's silence", the teacher gave him a bag of Snickers.

They let the teacher resign rather than prosecute. Of course. Probably the guy works at TSA now, but maybe not, as he clearly prefers to prey on just kids.

There's more. Public funds used for champagne, condoms and a king size mattress. Does anyone think this will change materially? I heard about the vodka in the coffee pot thing in the 80's, it's probably progressed since then. And does anyone think this is limited to Chicago? Well maybe with the scale of looting and depravity.

This is our president Barack Obama's mobocracy home town. No wonder both he and Rahmbo send their kids to private schools.

Meanwhile, up near the Wisconsin border, fleebagger central, spoiled rotten teachers are going on strike. One reaction:

Withstanding the union boss juggernaut? And since concealed carry passed, joining 48 other states (left in the cold, Illinois), gun ownership has soared. A good indicator for Walker? I noted over the New Year my small town, home town, swing district had a front page story on the phenomenon in the local newspaper.

Walker's strongest argument is that he did what he said he'd do--save individual jobs rather than the bloated boss hog public union contracts and unsustainable pensions--and it's working.

Next door in Illinois, same old sorry and broken story.

You’d think that after the Lehman debacle, all that would have changed. In fact, you’d think that would be practically the first thing to be changed — not credit-card swipe fees or executive-compensation rules or any of the rest of it. But it wasn’t. Corzine’s firm, MF Global, used something called “repo to maturity” — basically Repo 105 with a facelift — to accomplish the same goal: making the books look better by hiding bad assets, in this case a bunch of losing investments in European government bonds. The bigger problem is that while MF Global was both acting as a broker for its customers and making its own bets, it failed to keep the customers’ money segregated from its own, which is why some $600 million in customers’ money went missing. Now there’s a whole bunch of people wanting to get paid back and not enough money for everybody to get made whole, and the big Wall Street banks want to make sure that they’re first in line, with the government rewriting the rules of bankruptcy to put them ahead of the local-yokel customers out in the sticks. If you don’t think that the government can just arbitrarily rewrite the bankruptcy rules to suit its political preferences, revisit the General Motors bailout, when it did just that, shortchanging bondholders in favor of the union goons who act as Democratic footsoldiers and dues-collectors.

“At the risk of oversimplifying it,” one Wall Street insider explains, “imagine a bank went bankrupt. Then the regulators came in and cracked open all the customers’ safe-deposit boxes, even though they knew for certain that none of the contents belonged to the bank. Then they tossed those assets into the pile for the creditors to pick through and told the box holders to get in line as well. That’s what folks are saying is happening here. And in a situation like that, who wants a safe-deposit box?”

I supported him last time against McCain but I'll be damned if I'll suck it up this time and accede to the Republican establishment beltway bullies' pick of Mitt, when they told us last time McCain was the only one who could win.

I started this blog as a conservative first, not a Republican, and I entitled it Backyard as a jab to the pundits on both coasts, left and right, who dismiss the heartland. The Tea Party started with an open outcry by Rick Santelli that electrified the outrage in this country over elitist conventional wisdom which has looted and despoiled America now, and for future generations.

Let me take this opportunity to join with Legal Insurrection in expressing my further outrage today.

My spouse and I have been subscribers to National Review for over 30 years, I believe. We have signed books and a framed letter from the late great William F. Buckley.

That relationship is in jeopardy, by me.

The voters, Iowa and otherwise, will pick our nominee.

And as someone who lives in one party-run corrupt and bankrupt Illinois, the president's Dem and doomed home state, I'll be damned if I'll be dictated to in the Republican primary process.

Vote with your heart, folks, vote with your mind.

Vote your gut feel on who can best lead America.

She enrolled her daughter at birth but no go. Another state of Illinois program going bust, half a billion shortfall going going gone as the gap will widen to billions, but the state sends out this statement:

In a letter to contract holders this week, commission officials said the program's funded status "is much stronger than any of the state's pension plans and many corporate pension plans."

A disingenuous and useless claim, as Illinois pension plans are among the worst funded in the nation. In this college fund, Illinois had misrepresented the guarantee and assumed a ridiculously high rate of return, and this is the result.

Add to that the government student loan-generated tuition bubble and you have yet another big gov disaster our children and grandchildren will be forced to pay for.
